History of the Polikarpov I-16 "Rata": The First Modern Monoplane Fighter

The Polikarpov I-16, affectionately nicknamed "Rata" (Ishak in Russian, meaning "donkey") by Soviet pilots, was a revolutionary aircraft that entered service in 1934. Designed by aeronautical engineer Nikolai Polikarpov, the I-16 was the world's first low-wing monoplane fighter with retractable landing gear to enter mass production and operational service.

Revolutionary Technical Innovation

At a time when most fighters were biplanes with fixed landing gear, the I-16 represented an unprecedented technological leap:

  • First monoplane fighter with retractable landing gear: Drastic reduction in aerodynamic drag
  • Cantilever low-wing design: No external wires or struts
  • Mixed construction: Wooden fuselage with plywood skin and metal wings
  • Enclosed cockpit (later versions): Better pilot protection
  • Powerful armament: Up to 4 machine guns and unguided rockets

Technical Specifications of the I-16 RATA

The I-16 was produced in multiple variants with different engines and armaments. Specifications for the most common versions:

  • Engine: M-25 (early versions) or M-62/M-63 (late versions) air-cooled radial, 700-1,000 hp
  • Maximum speed: 450-525 km/h depending on the version
  • Service ceiling: 9,700-10,000 meters
  • Range: 700-820 km
  • Armament: 2-4 7.62mm ShKAS machine guns and/or 20mm ShVAK cannons
  • Rockets: Up to 6 82mm RS-82 unguided rockets
  • Bombs: Up to 500 kg of bombs
  • Empty weight: 1,490 kg
  • Maximum takeoff weight: 2,095 kg
  • Wingspan: 9 meters
  • Length: 6.13 meters
  • Crew: 1 pilot

Baptism of Fire: Spanish Civil War (1936-1939)

The I-16 received its baptism of fire during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), where it was sent by the Soviet Union to support Republican forces. Spanish Republican pilots nicknamed it "Mosca" (Fly), while Nationalist pilots derisively called it "Rata" (Rat), a name that paradoxically became popular.

In Spain, the I-16 demonstrated its superiority over the Italian Fiat CR.32 biplanes and early German Messerschmitt Bf 109s. Soviet volunteer pilots and Spanish Republican pilots achieved numerous aerial victories, establishing the I-16's reputation as a formidable fighter.

Soviet-Japanese Border Conflict: Khalkhin Gol (1939)

In 1939, during the border conflict between the Soviet Union and Japan at Khalkhin Gol (Mongolia), the I-16 confronted Japanese Nakajima Ki-27 and Mitsubishi A5M fighters. Under the command of the legendary Soviet pilot Georgy Zhukov (future Marshal of the USSR), the I-16s achieved air superiority, shooting down numerous Japanese aircraft.

This aerial battle demonstrated the I-16's effectiveness in combat and served as a testing ground for Soviet air tactics that would later be used in World War II.

Winter War against Finland (1939-1940)

During the Winter War between the Soviet Union and Finland (November 1939 - March 1940), the I-16 participated in close air support and air combat operations against Finnish fighters, mainly Fokker D.XXI and Gloster Gladiator. Despite harsh winter conditions, the I-16 demonstrated its robustness and reliability.

World War II: Operation Barbarossa (1941-1945)

When Nazi Germany launched Operation Barbarossa on June 22, 1941, the I-16 constituted a significant part of the Soviet fighter force. However, by then the design was already obsolete compared to the modern German Messerschmitt Bf 109F and Focke-Wulf Fw 190.

Despite its technical inferiority, Soviet I-16 pilots fought valiantly during the early years of the war. The I-16 participated in:

  • Defense of Moscow (1941): Desperate aerial battles against the Luftwaffe
  • Siege of Leningrad (1941-1944): Air defense of the besieged city
  • Battle of Stalingrad (1942-1943): Air support for ground forces
  • Battle of of Kursk (1943): Last major I-16 operations

From 1943, the I-16 was gradually withdrawn from front-line service and replaced by more modern fighters such as the Yakovlev Yak-1, Yak-3, Yak-9, Lavochkin La-5, and La-7.

"Taran" Tactic: Aerial Ramming

One of the most desperate and heroic tactics employed by Soviet I-16 pilots was the "Taran" (aerial ramming). When they ran out of ammunition or faced heavily armed enemy bombers, some Soviet pilots deliberately rammed German aircraft with their I-16s, sacrificing their own lives to bring down the enemy.

This tactic, though extremely dangerous, demonstrated the courage and determination of Soviet pilots during the darkest moments of the war.

Production and Variants

Between 1934 and 1942, approximately 8,600 units of the I-16 were produced in multiple variants:

  • I-16 Type 5: Early version with M-25 engine
  • I-16 Type 10: Improved M-25V engine, 2 ShKAS machine guns
  • I-16 Type 17: M-62 engine, 4 ShKAS machine guns
  • I-16 Type 24: M-63 engine, 2 20mm ShVAK cannons + 2 ShKAS machine guns
  • I-16 Type 29: Final version with M-63 engine and reinforced armament
  • UTI-4: Two-seat training version

I-16 RATA Ace Pilots

Numerous Soviet pilots became aces flying the I-16:

  • Anatoly Serov: 17 confirmed I-16 victories during the Spanish Civil War
  • Sergei Gritsevets: Hero of the Soviet Union, multiple victories at Khalkhin Gol
  • Boris Safonov: Soviet ace with I-16 victories during the first months of Barbarossa
  • Viktor Talalikhin: Famous for performing a nighttime Taran against a German bomber

Legacy of the I-16 RATA

The Polikarpov I-16 was a revolutionary aircraft that set new standards in fighter design. Although it was technologically surpassed during World War II, its contribution to Soviet and world military aviation is undeniable:

  • First modern monoplane fighter: Set the standard for future designs
  • Retractable landing gear: Innovation that became a universal standard
  • Combat proven: Experience in multiple conflicts that informed future Soviet designs
  • Symbol of resistance: Represented Soviet determination during the early years of the war
