The design of this T-shirt is a tribute to the U.S. Navy pilot school, the Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program (TOPGUN), whose headquarters are at Naval Air Station Miramar. This school, world-famous for the film starring Tom Cruise, has the mission of instructing selected naval pilots in air combat tactics who, upon returning to their units, will do so in the new role of instructors.

HISTORY AND CONTEXT

The Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program, known as TOPGUN, was established in 1969 at Naval Air Station Miramar, California, in response to low air combat success rates during the Vietnam War. The program was designed to train the best Navy pilots in advanced air combat tactics, who would then return to their squadrons as instructors.

TOPGUN includes theoretical instruction on enemy tactics, weapon systems, and combat doctrine, as well as flight missions with adversaries that recreate past and future air combat scenarios. TOPGUN instructors, known as "aggressors," fly aircraft that simulate the capabilities of enemy fighters, providing the most realistic training possible.

Since its inception, TOPGUN has trained thousands of naval fighter pilots, dramatically improving air combat success rates. The school moved to Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada, in 1996, where it continues to be the gold standard in air combat training.
