History of the Ford GPA "Seep": The Amphibious Jeep of World War II

The Ford GPA, nicknamed "Seep" (a contraction of "Sea Jeep"), was a revolutionary amphibious vehicle developed during World War II. Based on the successful Willys MB (the standard jeep), the Ford GPA was designed to operate both on land and in water, providing Allied forces with a unique amphibious mobility capability.

Innovative Development and Design

The Ford GPA was developed in 1942 by Ford Motor Company in collaboration with the U.S. Army. The design was based on the Willys MB but incorporated significant modifications to allow amphibious operations:

  • Watertight hull: Sealed body that allowed it to float in water
  • Marine propeller: Propulsion in water via engine-driven propeller
  • Rudder: Steering system in water
  • Bilge pump: To evacuate water that might enter the hull
  • Modified undercarriage: Adapted for amphibious operations
  • Reduced wheelbase: Better maneuverability in water

Ford GPA Technical Specifications

  • Engine: Ford GPW 4-cylinder in-line, 2.2 liters, 60 hp
  • Max speed on land: 80 km/h
  • Speed in water: 8-10 km/h
  • Traction: 4x4 on land
  • Propulsion in water: 3-blade marine propeller
  • Empty weight: 1,590 kg
  • Max weight: 2,270 kg
  • Load capacity: 340 kg (4 occupants + equipment)
  • Length: 4.62 meters
  • Width: 1.63 meters
  • Height: 1.73 meters
  • Wheelbase: 2.13 meters
  • Range on land: 400 km
  • Crew: 1 driver + 3 passengers

Production and Deployment

Between 1942 and 1943, Ford Motor Company produced approximately 12,778 units of the GPA. Although an innovative design, the GPA presented several operational issues:

  • Overweight: Too heavy for efficient amphibious operations
  • Low cargo capacity: Less than the standard Willys MB
  • Instability in water: Tendency to capsize in rough waters
  • Mechanical complexity: More difficult to maintain than the standard jeep
  • High cost: More expensive to produce than alternative vehicles

Due to these limitations, GPA production ceased in 1943, and many units were transferred to the Soviet Union through the Lend-Lease program.

Service in World War II

Despite its limitations, the Ford GPA served in various theaters of operation during World War II:

United States Army

  • Pacific Campaign: Amphibious landings on Pacific islands
  • Italian Campaign: River crossings and limited amphibious operations
  • D-Day (Normandy Landings): Some GPAs participated in the landing
  • Crossing of the Rhine (1945): River crossing operations in Germany

Soviet Union (Lend-Lease)

Most of the Ford GPAs produced (approximately 3,500 units) were sent to the Soviet Union through the Lend-Lease program. The Soviets used the GPA more effectively than the Americans:

  • River crossings: Reconnaissance and river crossing operations on the Eastern Front
  • Swamps and flooded terrain: Operations in Belarus and Ukraine
  • Logistical support: Transport of supplies in flooded areas
  • Amphibious reconnaissance: Exploration missions in aquatic areas

The Soviets appreciated the GPA for its ability to operate in swampy terrain and cross rivers without bridges, a common occurrence on the Eastern Front.

Comparison with the DUKW "Duck"

The Ford GPA is often compared to the DUKW (nicknamed "Duck"), another American amphibious vehicle of World War II:

  • GPA: Jeep-based, smaller, lower cargo capacity, better on land
  • DUKW: Truck-based, larger, higher cargo capacity (2,300 kg), better in water

The DUKW proved to be more successful and versatile than the GPA, with over 21,000 units produced and serving in all theaters of operation.

Legacy of the Ford GPA

Although the Ford GPA was not as successful as expected, its development contributed to the knowledge of military amphibious vehicles:

  • Amphibious design experience: Lessons learned for future vehicles
  • Influence on subsequent designs: Concepts applied in post-war amphibious vehicles
  • Extended Soviet service: Some GPAs served in the USSR until the 1950s
  • Collectibility: Today, the GPA is a highly sought-after collector's vehicle

The GPA in Popular Culture

The Ford GPA has appeared in various films, documentaries, and video games about World War II, though less frequently than the standard Willys MB. Its unique design and amphibious capability make it instantly recognizable.

Conservation and Restoration

Several examples of the Ford GPA are preserved in military museums around the world:

  • National WWII Museum (New Orleans, USA): Restored GPA in operational condition
  • Bovington Tank Museum (United Kingdom): Example on display
  • Central Museum of the Armed Forces (Moscow, Russia): Soviet GPA
  • Private collections: Numerous GPAs restored in the hands of collectors
