The Lightning - Revolutionary Innovation

The P-38 Lightning was one of the most advanced and radical designs of its time. Introduced in 1939, its unique twin-boom configuration with twin Allison V-1710 engines and a central nacelle for the pilot made it unmistakable in the air. Capable of reaching 666 km/h at high altitude, with concentrated armament in the nose (one 20mm cannon and four .50 machine guns), and an exceptional range of 2,100 km, the Lightning was the perfect long-range fighter for the vast distances of the Pacific Theater.

Combat Legends

The P-38 was the aircraft of the two top American aces of the war: Richard Bong (40 victories) and Thomas McGuire (38 victories), both flying in the Pacific. It was a P-38 that intercepted and shot down the plane of Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto in 1943, in one of the war's most audacious missions. In Europe, the Lightning served as an escort fighter, fighter-bomber, and photographic reconnaissance aircraft, participating in missions from North Africa to Germany.

Two Allison V-1710 engines, 1,475 hp each with turbochargers, wingspan of 15.85 meters, length of 11.53 meters, maximum weight of 9,798 kg. Armament: one 20mm Hispano M2 cannon and four 12.7mm Browning M2 machine guns, plus up to 1,451 kg of bombs or rockets. Maximum speed of 666 km/h at 7,620 meters altitude. German Luftwaffe pilots nicknamed the P-38 "der Gabelschwanz Teufel" (the fork-tailed devil) for its distinctive silhouette and its lethal effectiveness in combat. An unintentional recognition of the technical superiority of this American design.
