The Luger P08 - German Innovation

Designed by Georg Luger in 1898 and officially adopted by the German army in 1908, the P08 Parabellum Pistol (hence its designation) revolutionized handgun design. Its unique toggle-lock action system, instead of the conventional slide system, used two articulated arms that folded upwards during recoil, creating a distinctive and elegant movement. With a 100mm barrel, 9x19mm Parabellum caliber (a cartridge also designed by Luger), and an 8-round magazine, the P08 combined exceptional accuracy with superior ergonomics.

Service in Two World Wars

The Luger was the standard issue weapon for German officers and pilots during World War I, where its reliability and accuracy made it a highly coveted war trophy for Allied soldiers. During World War II, although gradually replaced by the Walther P38 (cheaper to produce), the Luger remained a status symbol for officers of the Wehrmacht, Luftwaffe, and Kriegsmarine. More than 3 million units were produced between 1900 and 1945.
