Introduced into service in 1962, the CH-47 Chinook revolutionized military air transport with its innovative configuration of two counter-rotating main rotors mounted in tandem. This arrangement eliminates the need for a tail rotor, allowing all engine power to be dedicated to lift and propulsion. With the capacity to carry 55 fully equipped soldiers, 12 tons of internal cargo, or up to 13 tons of external sling load, the Chinook is the indispensable workhorse of airborne operations.

Global Service and Combat

The Chinook has participated in every major conflict from Vietnam to Afghanistan. During the Vietnam War, it evacuated thousands of wounded soldiers and transported heavy artillery to inaccessible mountainous positions. In the Gulf Wars, Iraq, and Afghanistan, the Chinook demonstrated its versatility in airborne assault missions, medical evacuation, logistical resupply, and special operations. More than 1,200 units have been produced, serving in 20 countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Spain, Netherlands, Italy, Greece, and Japan.

The Chinook in Spain - FAMET

The Spanish Army operates the CH-47D/F Chinook since 1973 in the Spanish Army Airmobile Forces (FAMET). Based in Colmenar Viejo (Madrid), Spanish Chinooks have participated in international missions in Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Lebanon, and Mali, in addition to humanitarian aid operations and wildfire suppression on national territory. The Spanish fleet was upgraded to the CH-47F standard in 2017, ensuring its operability until 2060.

Legendary Versatility

The Chinook can transport Humvee vehicles, M777 howitzers, combat boats, ISO containers, complete light helicopters, and practically any load that fits under its ventral hook. Its rear ramp allows for quick loading/unloading even with rotors spinning. It can operate from aircraft carriers, improvised forward operating bases, active combat zones, and extreme terrains from deserts to the Himalayan mountains.
