Pay homage to the legendary Admiral Graf Spee, the famous armored cruiser (Panzerschiff) of the German Kriegsmarine, protagonist of the Battle of the River Plate in December 1939, one of the first naval battles of World War II.
The Admiral Graf Spee was a Deutschland-class armored cruiser of the Kriegsmarine, launched in 1934. Named after Admiral Maximilian von Spee, the ship was designed to operate as a commerce raider against Allied shipping.
The Graf Spee's most famous battle occurred off the coast of Uruguay, where it engaged three British cruisers: HMS Exeter, HMS Ajax, and HMS Achilles. Although it severely damaged the Exeter, the Graf Spee also sustained damage and sought refuge in the neutral port of Montevideo.
After 72 hours in Montevideo and believing that superior British forces were waiting for him, Captain Langsdorff ordered the scuttling of the ship in the Río de la Plata estuary. Three days later, Langsdorff committed suicide in Buenos Aires.
The Admiral Graf Spee became a symbol of naval honor. The remains of the ship are still visible in the Río de la Plata near Montevideo, Uruguay.
