HISTORY AND CONTEXT

The Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program, known as TOPGUN, was established in 1969 at Naval Air Station Miramar, California, to improve the air combat tactics of U.S. Navy pilots. Although TOPGUN is best known for its fighter pilots, Navy helicopter pilots also receive advanced training in combat tactics, combat search and rescue (CSAR), special forces insertion, and close air support.

U.S. Navy helicopter pilots operate platforms such as the MH-60 Seahawk, the MH-53 Sea Dragon, and the AH-1Z Viper, performing critical search and rescue missions, anti-submarine warfare, troop transport, and air attack. Their training includes theoretical instruction and flight missions with adversaries that recreate past and future air combat scenarios.
