History of the Heinkel He 111
The Heinkel He 111 was originally designed in 1934 as a civilian transport aircraft to circumvent the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles, but quickly became the primary medium bomber of the Luftwaffe. Over 7,300 units were produced between 1935 and 1944.

Production and Legacy
Approximately 7,300 He 111s were produced. Although obsolete by 1943, it continued in service until the end of the war. After WWII, Spain continued to produce and operate the He 111 (designated CASA 2.111) until 1973.
