DESIGN AND SYMBOLISM
The design of this T-shirt captures the essence of the BIO Hespérides, the oceanographic research vessel that conducts scientific campaigns in Antarctica and other oceans worldwide. The Hespérides is the flagship of the Spanish Antarctic Research Program, supporting the Spanish scientific bases Juan Carlos I and Gabriel de Castilla.
This T-shirt is ideal for wearing on days off, scientific events, open days, veteran meetings of Antarctic campaigns, or as a perfect gift for Hespérides crew members, scientists, polar researchers, and oceanographic exploration enthusiasts.
HISTORY AND CONTEXT
The Oceanographic Research Vessel (BIO) Hespérides (A-33) is a Spanish Navy vessel dedicated to oceanographic and polar scientific research. Launched in 1990 and put into service in 1991, the Hespérides has carried out more than 30 Antarctic campaigns, becoming the Spanish vessel with the most experience in polar navigation.
With an overall length of 82.5 meters and capacity for 50 crew members and 30 scientists, the Hespérides is equipped with state-of-the-art scientific laboratories, dynamic positioning systems, and light icebreaking capability. Every year, during the austral summer (December-March), the Hespérides sails to Antarctica to supply the Spanish scientific bases and conduct oceanographic, biological, geological, and climatic research.
The Hespérides has contributed significantly to scientific knowledge about climate change, Antarctic marine biodiversity, and polar geology. Its name pays homage to the Hesperides, the nymphs of Greek mythology who guarded the garden of golden apples at the westernmost edge of the known world.
This T-shirt celebrates the legacy of the BIO Hespérides, the professionalism of its crew, and the dedication of the scientists who, campaign after campaign, contribute to the knowledge of our planet's oceans and poles.
