History of the Avro Lancaster

The Avro Lancaster was the most successful RAF heavy bomber during World War II. With over 7,300 units produced between 1941 and 1946, the Lancaster flew 156,000 missions and dropped 608,612 tons of bombs, more than any other Allied bomber.

  • Bombing of Dresden (1945): Controversial operation

"The Dambusters"

The most famous Lancaster mission was Operation Chastise, where 19 Lancasters of 617 Squadron attacked the German Ruhr dams using the revolutionary "Upkeep" bouncing bombs designed by Barnes Wallis.

Production and Service

Over 7,377 Lancasters were produced. The Lancaster primarily served with RAF Bomber Command, but also with the RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force).

Legacy

Only 17 Lancasters survive today, with only 2 in flying condition: one with the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and another at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.
