U-96 was an iconic German WWIC Type VIIC submarine that entered service in September 1940. Its commander was frigate captain Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock until March 1942.

This submarine was sunk on March 30, 1945 by American bombers at its Wilhelmshaven base.
A war correspondent Lothar-Günther Buchheim accompanied the U 96 crew on one of their patrols with the order to photograph and describe the submarine in action for propaganda purposes. From this account comes the famous movie Das Boot, the best submarine film ever shot for many of the fans of WWII history.
