El Pilatus PC-21: El Nuevo Avión de la Formación Mirlo

The Pilatus PC-21: The New Aircraft for Mirlo Training

The Mirlo Formation enters a new era

The Spanish Air and Space Force's Mirlo Formation (formerly known as Patrulla Águila) has begun its transition to the Pilatus PC-21, replacing the veteran CASA C-101 Aviojet that has served for decades as an aerobatic display platform.

Why the Pilatus PC-21?

The PC-21 is considered the most modern advanced training aircraft in the world, and its adoption by the Mirlo Formation represents a significant technological leap:

  • Pratt & Whitney PT6A-68B turboprop engine with 1,600 hp
  • Maximum speed exceeding 685 km/h
  • Pressurized cockpit with state-of-the-art digital avionics
  • Fly-by-wire control systems for greater precision
  • Martin-Baker Mk.16 ejection seats
  • Excellent maneuverability and power-to-weight ratio

From C-101 to PC-21: A historic change

The CASA C-101 Aviojet has been the emblem of the Spanish aerobatic patrol since its creation. However, after more than four decades of service, the Air Force has opted to modernize its training fleet with the PC-21, manufactured by the Swiss company Pilatus Aircraft.

This change not only benefits the Mirlo Formation in its displays but also significantly improves the training of future Spanish military pilots, who now train with technology comparable to that of fifth-generation fighters.

Improved aerobatic capabilities

The PC-21 offers superior performance for the aerobatic maneuvers that characterize the Mirlo Formation:

  • More power for more spectacular vertical ascents
  • More precise controls for close formations
  • Better visibility from the cockpit
  • Advanced safety systems

New name, same excellence

The name change from Patrulla Águila to Mirlo Formation coincides with this modernization, marking a new chapter in the history of Spanish aerobatic aviation. The Mirlo Formation continues to be one of the leading teams in Europe, combining the experience and professionalism of its pilots with the most advanced aerospace technology.
